Week 2: Monday and Tuesday

This week has flown by! Sorry for the delays in postings- I will try to be better this week!

Monday- outpatient clinic in the morning followed by an afternoon of  2 home visits. There are locals in the community that are not able to come to the clinic, so we come to them! One of the men we saw had bilateral tibia-fibula  (2 bones in the lower leg) fractures in January and he is still in below the knee casts and just received the okay from the doctor to bear weight- but is in too much pain when in standing to do so for longer than 30 seconds. Then we visited a 9 year old boy in his home.
It was really neat to see patients in their homes and see how the family interacts with us and how well they are taking care of the family member that is injured.

Tuesday mobile to a small village- Na Luum Ca
We only saw 2 patients today, but we were lucky to have found a patient for our case study for our presentation on Wednesday.  We worked on the presentation while we were waiting for patients.
The picture is of the San Antonio Poly Clinic that serves about 9 villages- we pick up charts when we go on mobile's to some of their villages.

For dinner, a group of 5 of us went to Bel Campo- a local resort on top of a mountain- for a Belizian family style dinner! We arrived at the resort- and got a tour of some of the facilities- AMAZING! Here’s the link. http://www.belcampoinc.com/bz/
We had a deal with the manager- only 20 American $ for the meal vs 55- so we were super excited.  We started with delicious drinks- fresh pineapple and orange juice and a local Caribbean rum; the yellow bird, and some of the girls had fresh mojitos, which I tried and was amazed :)
We began with an appetizer of black bean dip and little pieces of Jonny Cakes (wheat bread). Then out came all the dishes! There was rice and stewed beans, of course,   coleslaw, cabbage salad, pineapple rum glazed chicken, seasoned lentils,  sautéed vegetables in coconut oil, cauhun cabbage (from hearts of a palm tree- and spiced with curry)  all in huge bowls. Then for dessert we had one of everything- pineapple pie, velvet pie, papaya sorbet, and Mayan chocolate pudding. All very flavorful and we were stuffed!
We watched a storm roll in- and then got a ride back to Abby’s house before the storm was too bad.
