Sorry for the delay of postings! what a week it has been!
Tuesday: Went on first mobile visit to a village- Crique
Sarco – which is a village that was about a 2 hour drive from us, well two
hours when you are going 20-25 mph max on the muddy roads that were somewhat
flooded from the rain the night before.
Caroline and myself got to ride in the rehab truck, which was less bumpy
than the vehicle everyone else rode in.
The mobile visits are when half of the PA, Med, pharm and
PT students pack up supplies and set up a clinic for the day in a rural
village. We will be doing at least one
mobile a week, next week we actually have two.
In route to the village, we had to stop because there was a bridge that
you had to walk across. So we all carried a load and were stopped by a massive puddle.
In which we did not cross yet. We went
back over the bridge and made do with what was there, a very nice family let us
set up the clinic in their back yard area.
The pharmacy was in the back of the rehab truck bed.
After waiting for a bit, none of the patients that we were
going to check on in the clinic had arrived and the med and PA students did not
have any referrals for us, so we decided to make the trek into the village to
find our patients. That meant crossing
the huge puddle- that was knee deep- and fairly large. So Carol, Caroline and myself went trekking
through- at one point Carol was stuck in front of me and then I was stuck too,
so we teamed up and I pushed her and she pulled me and our feet finally got
unstuck from the mud! – Carol was in Men’s size 9 rain boots, in her size 6
foot- so there was plenty of squishing around for her!
Once we made it to Cirque Sarco village, we found the health
care worker, a person in the community that identifies if people need to be
seen by a health care provider for the next mobile visit. We talked with him for a bit and he showed us
to the house of one of the woman we needed to see. We were lucky to see a Mayan home, and see
the kitchen that these women cook in, and be able to make exercises and stretches
that they will be able to do in that setting.
After the evaluation of the patient, and the rain storm that passed, we
made our way back to the rest of the students for lunch. We managed to avoid
the puddle, and had a walk through the jungle.
The mobile clinic was supposed to end at 2, but more patients came at
1:50, so we stayed until they all were treated. We had 3 more PT consults, so
that was nice for us to have more to do, instead of waiting around.
We came back and got ready for dinner- it was at a local
bar, which an American woman owns. We had burgers, barbeque flavored chicken
and homemade doughnuts and key lime pie. After dinner we went around the table
discussing what we loved most about America and our favorite I love America songs,
quite funny having the students from the UK and Canada tell us what they loved
most about America.
Happy 4th of July!- Everyone in their red, white and blue!
Wednesday, July 4th,- all day planning for restorative class. But in July 4th spirit, I wore my red scrub top and blue bottoms!
And I saw my first tarantula I
wasn’t scared of it because it was sitting on a wall- so I got to take a quick
picture.
