Friday:
This morning we had a break from patient care and worked on
our rehabilitation rehab program with Florecita. We gave 4 mini-lectures and
edited our curriculum for her. It’s nice to give lectures to 1 person- it makes
it much easier on the presenter – being able to really pay attention to your
audience’s understanding and grasp on the information. Then we went to lunch at the Anaconda Bar-
where we went for the 4th of July- as a Rehab Team/ Team PT because
the other students went to the chocolate factory (we’ll be going in another 4
weeks with the next group of students).
After everyone got back from lunch- we had to say bye to
everyone and then rush out to catch a bus to San Ignacio, for our weekend
adventure!
Our weekend group:
Caroline and myself and then Raphael (An official DOCTOR
now! From Canada who was traveling a bit more before he leaves on Thursday) and
Joe (a pharm student from Drake, who changed his flight till Tuesday to travel
more).
It was sad saying bye to the first group that was so
welcoming to us. I’m forever grateful
for their kind words when we first arrived, for all the laughs we had,
for being taught lots of things about the UK- esp the special Welsh dance-
gotta love hypermobility, for the enthusiasm that we all had the majority of
the time, for playing cranium
and for being supportive and eager to learn more about PT! I’m going to miss
all of you!
So we headed to the bus stop to hope and pray that a bus
would arrive to take us to Belmopan and then to transfer to San Ignacio- and it
did! My first real public bus riding experience…..
Around Belize- there is a cheap bus- the James Bus line- in
which you hop on at any bus stop and then a “conductor” comes around to collect
your money based on where you are going- we call him or her the bus
bouncer. It was only 19 Belize dollars
so about 9.50 american to take the bus 4 ½ hours north/ west. It was really neat to see the country side of
the Toledo district where we are in Punta Gorda (PG) and then the other
districts as we rode north.
To tie in my title of this blog…. Me being my usual self had
to pee, and at 2 ½ hours into the journey there was a bus stop in Dangriga in
which you can run in a use the bathroom. So I am booking it to the bathroom and
the lights don’t work, so I run back out- at which point, Raphael is in line to
pay for the bathroom, (who knew?) so he pays for me and I grab my toilet paper
and go back to see if maybe paying will turn the lights on? Haha NOPE!
While I ran out- two moms came in the bathroom, each with 3
kids- so needless to say the 2 stalls in the dark were already being occupied.
So I’m waiting by the door, and I'm starting to be scared the bus will leave
without me. So then the man that was running the whole pay to use the bathroom
operation told me to use the men’s room. So I said "whatever I will!" I
waited for the man to exit then I went into the well-lit, nice and clean stall.
However, when I exited there was a man using the urinal…. Awkward…. So I ran
out of that situation and the bus was waiting for me :)
We finally arrived at Belmopan and did the bus transition to
San Ignacio and arrived about 10pm- much earlier than we thought! The bus
conductor got us a taxi at the bus stop- our first classic taxi ride in San
Ignacio; Ramos, the driver, had a car that was not holding together so well. It
made an awful grinding noise and was spitting rocks as we climbed the massive
hill as to where our hotel was located (on top of the city). But we survived-
and rolled with it :)
Our hotel was gorgeous, to say the least- great views, 2
swimming pools, great bar/ eating area, and I can’t forget the CABANA that we
stayed in!
Our cabana for the weekend! |
But we were also starving so we decided to brave the massive
hill and walk down to the bottom to get Chinese food- my first Belizean Chinese
food experience- and it wasn’t bad, but
it also was at 10:30 at night so I was a bit hungry, PB &J and veggies for
dinner doesn’t always cut it! Then we walked back up the hill, I was definitely not in hill climbing shape! And went back to our cabana- where we had the AC
cranked up :)I
said I wanted to freeze- and that I did.
